So, DrumSkull, just to be clear, you're doing the "bu-bum, bu-bum, bu-bum, bu-bum" pattern on the double-kicks?
Your right foot takes the up-beats and left, the downs?
OK. If this is true, try this:
For the left foot only, lower foot on footboard to the bottom third of the footplate.
Execute a double stroke, starting on the downbeat, with your left-foot, while doing your normal shuffle and as you described.
Listen to this (It starts out normal and then, in the second-half, I do the triplet):
